Beatriz Gerenstein’s participation in the 9th Florence Biennale represented an important step in the international development of her artistic practice. Bringing her work to Florence placed her sculptures within a global dialogue and introduced to an international audience many of the ideas that would continue to evolve throughout her career.

 

The three works presented—Couple, Opportunity, and The Tree and the Book—approach the human experience from different perspectives. Couple reflects Gerenstein’s continuing fascination with intimacy and the emotional bonds between people. Opportunity evokes possibility and the moments of choice and transformation that shape our lives. The Tree and the Book brings together two enduring symbols: the tree as an expression of life, growth, and continuity, and the book as a vessel for knowledge, memory, and human experience.

 

Although distinct in form and subject, the three sculptures share an underlying concern that remains central to Gerenstein’s work: how human beings connect—with one another, with their inner lives, and with the larger world around them.

 

Seen in retrospect, Florence was more than a first biennale participation. It marked the beginning of a broader international chapter in Gerenstein’s career and anticipated the themes of connection, coexistence, spirituality, and the human condition that would become increasingly prominent in her later sculptures and monumental works.
